Identifying Connections

Purpose

This activity helps volunteers think through individuals they are connected to. This supports the Identify Phase of the fundraising cycle.

Time

10 minutes

Preparation

Print out a connections worksheet for each volunteer.

Directions

  1. Set the stage: Review Linkage – Ability – Interest as the trifecta for identifying potential donors for the organization. As board members, they can serve as a link for the organization to individuals. For this activity, we are going to jot down individual names of connections we have for each of the categories listed. You do not need to think through specifics of how you would engage them, or their capacity to give. At this point, you are focused on listing names of individuals that you are connected to.

  2. Individual Reflection: Pass out worksheet. Invite volunteers to fill it out. Set a time limit of 5 minutes. It is important that there is urgency so they do not over think the names, but rather focus on having names listed.

  3. Collect: Gather and collect all the worksheets from the volunteers. Let them know staff will follow up with them to discuss.

  4. Follow up: After the meeting, a staff member should review each of the names submitted. Make note of which individuals are already connected to the organization as a volunteer or donor. Make note of any information about ability or interest. Set up a follow up meeting with each individual volunteer to discuss their list. Share with them which of the individuals are already engaged. Identify next steps to cultivate individuals.
