I Like - I Wish - I Wonder

Purpose

This activity is great for board members to provide input, process ideas and identify potential opportunities regarding a critical discussion topic.

Time

20 minutes

Preparation

Provide pre-reads on a topic for discussion.

Write down the following prompts in advance, either on a slide, flip chart or white board:

I like - 3

I wish - 2

I wonder -1

Directions

  1. Set the stage: Share initial materials related to the discussion topic. This can be done in pre-reads and also in a live presentation. The intention is to provide background and information to inform the board members of the topic of discussion. This topic could be a new initiative, a program, a project, a challenge or any other board meeting topic.

  2. Individual Reflection: Provide the prompt of I like, I wish, I wonder, by saying:
”Now that we have read/heard about the project, please take a minute to jot down 3 things you like about the project, 2 things you wish about the project and one thing you wonder about the project.”

Allow everyone to take a minute to jot down three things they liked two things they wish and one thing they are wondering about.

  3. Sharing: Provide an opportunity for all to share their items for like/wish/wonder. This can be done in many ways such as sharing with a partner and then debriefing as a group. Or you can have everyone write them on post it notes and put them on a wall or use a virtual white board to have everyone share, and then debrief what is on the post it notes or virtual white board.

  4. Group Reflection: After sharing, debrief as a group….

    • What caught your attention about what folks like, wish and wonder?

    • What seems critical for us to make note of?

    • What questions does this raise for you?

    • So, just what have we learned?
