Connecting to the Cause

Purpose

This activity reminds folks of their reasons for engaging, connects them to each other, and builds experience and confidence in articulating their “whys” for being engaged with the organization.

Time

15 minutes

Preparation

Write down the questions in advance, either on a slide, flip chart or white board. The questions are:

  • What inspired you to get involved with this nonprofit?

  • Why do you feel this organization’s work is essential in today’s world?

Directions

  1. Set the stage: Let folks know that we are all drawn to this work for various reasons. Remind folks that there are so many wonderful aspects of our organization, and that we have the opportunity to share, listen and learn about the various ways we are all connected to this cause.

  2. Individual Reflection: Invite folks to reflect on the questions you have prepared in advance, and write down their individual answers to those questions.

    • What inspired you to get involved with this nonprofit?

    • Why do you feel this organization’s work is essential in today’s world?

Give a few minutes for individual reflection.

  3. Sharing: Invite everyone to move throughout the room, and find a partner. Introduce yourself to the partner and share your answers to the two questions. Then, the other partner shares their answers.  After the sharing is completed, switch and find a new partner. Repeat the discussions.

  4. Group Reflection:  When time has concluded, bring everyone together and as a group, and pose each of the following questions, one at a time:

    • What stood out to you about what you heard?

    • What was inspiring?

    • What is the importance of this?

    • What have we learned about our organization?
